The crowded tenements of the "Greek Acre" provided children with the opportunity for an abundance of friends with whom they played sports games on the North Common.
In football, the Acre Blackhawks, led by quarterback Phil Georges, won the city amateur championship in 1936 and the city semipro championship in 1938. Nicoholas Matsas managed the Lowell Lambs, a semi-pro baseball team. Basketball attracted Greek Americans because the churches and organizations including AHEPA, GAPA, YMCA, and the Boys Club organized leagues. The Sons of Pericles basketball team, with manager James Kritsis, won the championship of New England Chapter of the Order.
